A fire last week resulted in smoke damaged goods throughout the store but the RD said they don't belong in the dump.
A steady stream of people arrived at the Courtenay Walmart Sunday to find out that it's still closed after a fire Thursday evening. That's when a rack of clothing was set ablaze filling the store with smoke."We had open flame probably about a good 8 to 10 feet off the ground and a considerable amount of smoke inside the store," Courtenay Fire Chief Kurt MacDonald said at the scene.
“You know it’s hard to imagine that the entire inventory needs to be written off and disposed of but that’s possible so we’re just trying to understand what other opportunities there are and encourage them,” said CVRD GM of Engineering Mark Rutten. “Just sort of all the other niceties to life that sometimes people can’t afford so that would include toys leading into Christmas, it could be furniture effects, it could be electronics,” he added.” Basically it could be anything that we’re keeping out of the landfill .”
