A bailiff acting on behalf of the landlord arrived to serve legal papers\u003B The United People of Canada say that its lease is still valid

A termination of lease order was posted on the door of the majestic old stone church on Aug. 18 but a deadline of just after midnight on Thursday for TUPOC to leave came and went.

The bailiff, Dave, said in a brief phone interview Friday that the matter is “before the courts” and he’s not that familiar with the process because in his experience it’s rare. “Normally when I go , people are honourable and they leave, but these people aren’t.”Article content Dave says he’s not “overly concerned” about the TUPOC supporters, “but I certainly don’t want them knowing my last name because then it just could be bad.”

A couple of TUPOC guards with super-soaker water pistols had squirted anyone deemed a threat, from protesters to journalists, and there was a scuffle. Some of its directors and supporters are part of the so-called freedom movement, which incorporates people who oppose COVID-19 vaccines, mandates and public-health measures, oppose Prime Minster Justin Trudeau and have various other grievances.Article content

“I’m putting my neck out there because I feel really strongly that the occupation of the church is dangerous, I felt the Freedom Convoy is dangerous, and I feel that putting the two together is a tragedy waiting to happen.”
