It was a day of political theatre — but not much drama — at The United People of Canada’s “embassy” at St. Brigid’s church Thursday.

The 12:01 a.m. deadline for when the bailiff’s eviction order could be enforced came and went without incident. The owner wants TUPOC out of the deconsecrated Catholic church where they’ve been set up since early summer, saying they haven’t paid their rent or provided proof of insurance.Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

Komer says the charade is an attempt to defuse the tension between the group and its Lowertown neighbours, though some of TUPOC’s critics took it more as a provocative poke in the eye.Article content Another of TUPOC’s critics, Erica Lackey, parked herself behind Komer on a red musk oak chair at St Brigid’s front door and refused to leave. After warning Lackey she was trespassing, TUPOC opened fire with their squirt guns as news cameras rolled. Then, warning the media that they were interfering and also trespassing, TUPOC turned their squirt guns on them too.

On Wednesday, Cease Bailiff, the company acting for St. Brigid’s owners, said it wouldn’t comment on its plans, but texted “I can advise TUPC will be leaving.”
