Costco Wholesale is under pressure to eliminate its DEI program following a Supreme Court ruling that sparked legal challenges against corporate DEI initiatives.
Costco Wholesale is facing pressure from shareholders to eliminate its Diversity , Equity , and Inclusion ( DEI ) program. The National Center for Public Policy Research has brought a proposal challenging the legality of Costco 's DEI program, citing the Supreme Court 's ruling in SFFA v. Harvard that race-based discrimination in college admissions violates the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment.
The proposal points to legal warnings issued to Fortune 100 companies by attorneys general of 13 states and a number of lawsuits filed against corporations with DEI programs. Companies like Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Zoom, and John Deere have reportedly rolled back DEI commitments and/or laid off employees from DEI departments. However, Costco's board of directors maintains that its DEI efforts are essential to its success and commitment to inclusivity for all employees. Shareholders will vote on the proposal
