Copper surfaces may help in the fight against viruses, bacteria in hospitals
Researchers studied three different formulations of copper-bearing alloys — solid copper, spray-on copper, and Cu-impregnated surfaces — and looked at how they differed in antimicrobial efficacy, durability, and compatibility with hospital-grade cleaners.
What researchers found was that while all copper formulations killed microbes, the solid copper and spray-on Cu alloys worked the best. Some hospitals already have some copper use, for example in the ICE unit at Vancouver General Hospital, said Wong. He said VCH is also recommending that new health care buildings use copper, such as the new wing at Lion’s Gate Hospital.
