Two companies, New Horizon Development Group and TKEM Electric Ltd., have been issued substantial fines after a worker died in a fall from a construction site roof in Hamilton, Ontario. The incident occurred in August 2022 and highlighted the importance of fall protection measures at work sites.
On August 16, 2022, a tragic incident occurred at a construction site in Hamilton, Ontario , resulting in the death of an electrician. The worker was installing wiring on the roof of a two-storey commercial building located at 40 Mallard Trail when he fell to the ground. Investigations revealed that the roof lacked any temporary fencing or guarding at its edge, despite the presence of a parapet wall.
Access to this part of the roof was via an unlocked stairwell, and neither the stairwell nor the roof displayed warning signs about the fall hazard. The Ontario government court bulletin states that New Horizon Development Group, the construction company responsible for the site, failed to comply with regulations requiring fall hazard warning signs on the roof. TKEM Electric Ltd., the electrician's employer, also faced charges for not providing the worker with adequate information, instruction, or supervision regarding the fall hazard posed by the roof's edge. Both companies pleaded guilty in Provincial Offences Court in Hamilton.
