The party hauled in just over $8 million from the beginning of the year to the end of March
OTTAWA — The Conservative Party has broken a record for the best-ever first quarter fundraising result by a federal political party, which they are taking as a sign Canadians have been paying attention as the SNC-Lavalin scandal has unfolded.
The number of individual contributors has also swelled — 50,026 donors put money into the Conservative pot, the largest number of quarterly donors to pitch in for any political party since before the last federal election. The Post asked the NDP for an update on their totals but a spokesman said the party couldn’t provide a response on Monday.
Fundraising numbers by themselves don’t paint a full picture. As the Conservatives continue to outpace the Liberals on the money front, Team Trudeau is keen to point out that part of the equation is that the Conservatives spend consistently more on fundraising activities. According to financial returns provided to Elections Canada, in 2017, the Tories spent $7.2 million on fundraising expenses versus the Liberals’ $2.7 million. The same year, the parties had brought in $18.8 million and $13.
