Two Saskatchewan families who spoke out about their alleged mistreatment at a Mexican resort are receiving compensation after claiming they were pressured to sign non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) by staff. The families, who became severely ill at the Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun resort, shared their experiences with CBC News, prompting investigations by travel companies and a temporary suspension of reviews on Tripadvisor.

Two Saskatchewan families who went public about their alleged mistreatment at a Mexican resort are receiving compensation. The families, travelling with WestJet and Sunwing Vacations respectively, claimed they became seriously ill at the Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun resort and were pressured by staff to sign non-disclosure agreements. These agreements allegedly prevented them from leaving the resort or seeking medical attention until they signed.

Neither family signed the NDAs and subsequently shared their experiences with CBC News. Since going public, both families have been offered compensation. Jesslyn Schigol, travelling with her husband and two sons, received a $10,000 refund for their hotel stay and $1,500 in travel credit from WestJet. Schigol attributes her success to the detailed documentation she gathered at the resort, urging others to do the same. She emphasized the importance of photos, videos, email threads, and other evidence to support their claims when seeking redress from travel agents or tour companies. Allison Field, who travelled with her husband and four-year-old son, received a refund for their stay after Sunwing Vacations contacted her. Field notes that many individuals have reached out to her with similar stories of resorts pressuring guests to sign NDAs, highlighting a systemic issue. Tripadvisor, meanwhile, temporarily suspended new reviews for the Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun resort due to an influx of submissions following media attention surrounding these incidents.
