A search and rescue helicopter helps in a search Monday, Dec. 26 for a lobster fisherman near Cape Sable Island. - Kathy JohnsonHearts are heavy once again in fishing communities in southwestern Nova Scotia – and throughout the province – as people grieve another tragedy in the lobster and fishing industry.

Prayers were being offered on social media for the missing man and his family throughout the search, with family members also asking for prayers that he be found. The coast guard vessels Clarks Harbour and Cape Roger were tasked to the search as were a Cormorant rescue helicopter and a Canadian Forces Hercules airplane from 413 Squadron in Greenwood. The fishing vessels included ones already out fishing and others that went out to the search area, JRCC said. Although the vessels weren’t tasked by JRCC their presence was felt.

“They certainly saturated the search area and they continued the search well past what would be indicated by their survivability models,” said Hickey. A member of the fisherman’s family also expressed sadness as well as gratitude for the search efforts in a Facebook post shared by others.
