Halifax activist and educator Augy Jones. - ContributedAugy Jones has been tabbed to lead a panel that will address Nova Scotia’s checkered history involving environmental racism.
Jones said his immediate task is not to focus directly on the sites of those environmental burdens, the contaminated sites historically placed near Black and Indigenous Nova Scotia communities as outlined in Waldron’s 2018 book There’s Something in the Water: Environmental Racism in Indigenous and Black Communities and the subsequent 2020 Netflix documentary by the same name co-produced by Waldron, Nova Scotia-born actor Elliot Page and Ian Daniel.
The overlap is shameful, and included a long-standing dump located in the settled Black community on the south side of Shelburne, the Boat Harbour lagoon that collected pulp and paper mill effluent for more than half a century next to the Indigenous community of Pictou Landing First Nation, and the planned but since aborted development by Alton Gas to flush out salt from the Shubenacadie River estuary to create underground gas-storage caverns and discharge 1.
“I would anticipate that there would be more systemic legislation around environmental racism that will be put in place so that it is not just a one-off, so that it is something sustainable going forward so that in 2032 we’re not still discussing environmental racism in Nova Scotia,” he said.
