UnsplashBertha Hughes, a vascular surgery nurse practitioner who was born and studied in P.E.I. and now lives in Toronto, provided the following opinion article. which may not fully account for the five family physicians who have recently left.

Nurse practitioner-led clinics were initiated in Ontario in 2007 in response to thousands of patients who did not have a primary care provider. Tthere are now 25 nurse-practitioner led clinics serving communities like those on P.E.I. with ongoing evaluation supporting both efficiency and positive patient health outcomes. In 2020, British Columbia had also initiated nurse practitioner-led clinics to respond to patient needs.

When I left P.E.I. in 2006, the legislation supporting the nurse practitioner role had not been finalized and my intent was to leave for a year to gain more experience before returning to practise on P.E.I.
