Come hell or high water: Voices of the flood — Vern Kimball, former Calgary Stampede CEO yyc
Time slows. We convene the crisis team — VPs Warren Connell, Paul Rosenberg, Paul Harrison, Deanne Carson, Susan Garnett and director of communications Kurt Kadatz. The city has declared a state of emergency. The Stampede team knows what to do based on experience from the flood of 2005.
8 p.m.: Some employees are called back to work to move files, computers and other valuables from basement areas to higher ground. 9 a.m.: It’s the first of twice-daily crisis management team meetings. Work gets divided. Warren Connell and Paul Rosenberg tasked with assessment of physical infrastructure damage and recovery and programming possibilities for Stampede.
Late Saturday: The crisis management team is resolved that we can deliver Stampede and a press conference is planned. Secondly, the Stampede reflects the community. The “hell or high water” slogan came from the community, from the twittersphere. For fun, we initially ordered 720 T-shirts with that expression. Community support eventually resulted in the sale of 165,000 of them — a testament to the pride and ownership the community has in its Stampede. T-shirt proceeds of $2.1 million went to the Red Cross for flood relief efforts.
