Come hell or high water: Voices of the flood — Vern Kimball, former Calgary Stampede CEO yyc

2 p.m.: Flood defence measures go into effect. The Elbow River Camp is evacuated; animals are relocated; sandbagging and concrete barriers are placed strategically around track, Grandstand, BMO Centre and electric substation; storm sewers are closed; equipment that could float away is relocated or locked down.

Midnight: Stampede Park is evacuated, except for a small team of employees led by electrical foreman Steve Agar. They stay through the night in the electrical substation using pumps, brooms, and squeegees to keep flood water away from critical electrical infrastructure. If substation fails, electrical infrastructure cannot be repaired in time for Stampede.

Late Friday evening: Dirt is sourced; contractors, suppliers and technical specialists are all ready to go once flood water recedes. Monday, June 24: President and chairman of the board, Bob Thompson, announces that Stampede 101 will go ahead, “Come hell or high water.”
