Coldplay's request for hand sorting waste at their Vancouver concerts inspired BC Place to increase their sustainability efforts and work towards a 90% waste diversion goal.
After Coldplay \'s two shows in Vancouver in September, 2023, the team at BC Place hand sorted the waste produced from the shows. The band requested this extra step, which involved bringing in additional staff from their haulage and waste sorting companies to collect, spread out, and hand sort all the garbage. The waste was then repacked into the right bins to ensure maximum diversion.
Coldplay provided funding to support these efforts, which align with their own sustainability goals of reducing consumption, minimizing waste, and cutting carbon emissions by 50 percent. This initiative inspired BC Place to strive for their goal of 90 percent waste diversion by 2025. Other bands are also making strides in sustainability, such as Massive Attack, who hosted a one-day festival, Act 1.5, powered entirely by renewable energy, using electric vehicles for transport, prioritizing local residents for tickets, and discouraging parking to promote public transit.
