The study says as the winters grow shorter in Canada\u0027s North, about 20 per cent of the hares still have brown fur late into the fall.

There they trapped snowshoe hares, recorded the percentage of white and brown in each hare’s coat, tagged each hare and set it free. They studied about 6,000 hares in the fall and about 4,000 in the fall, said Krebs.

“It’s a dog eat dog environment, but the hare is at the centre of it,” said Krebs, in an interview Saturday. While hares are highly adaptable creatures, Krebs said more research is needed to understand how quickly they can adapt to the warming climate. “When it comes to the switch from brown to white, which we call molting, timing is everything. We can see in this study that climate change is making it harder for the hares to get that timing just right,” said Oli, in a statement.
