Options to find more money include taking more from the city\u0027s water utility for general revenue, or deferring payments to reserves.

The city’s 2022 budget includes a $7 million global reduction, which is effectively a broad target council set for the administration to find savings.

Hack and the administration propose council consider various one-time options to find the rest at the end of this year. These include about $4.2 million worth of ideas, such as a one-off increase in what gets taken for general revenue from the city’s water utility, reducing contributions to a reserve fund for special events and redirecting leftover money from completed capital projects that would normally be put in reserve funds.

Riversdale Business Improvement District executive director Randy Pshebylo thanked city staff and council for trying to find savings as Saskatoon businesses recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. He said businesses don’t want standards eroded for things like road and sidewalk maintenance. He called for the committee to support options that would balance savings with keeping core services running.

The committee recommended unanimously that a provincial representative be added to the advisory body meant to “foster connections between business and community partners and the City Administration and City Council” in the effort to get a new arena and convention centre.
