Meiszner said that city staff decided not to renew the lease because the facility’s operators “have been very unresponsive to the concerns of the community about what was happening outside the site,” including people camping on the sidewalk. He hopes Coastal Health can find a better location for an overdose prevention site in the Yaletown or Downtown South area before the lease expires next March. He said. “It’s VCH’s decision … I’m not involved in that process at all. VCH needs to find a location before the lease expires.”
“What I’m calling for is the mayor and ABC to commit to keeping this space open until there’s a new location, so that we don’t see a disruption in services that leads to more deaths,” Boyle said.
