The City of Charlottetown is inching toward a significant upgrade to one of its most congested streets.

That contract also includes a planned extension to Spencer Drive, which runs behind Royalty Crossing. The first phase of the University Avenue project would involve Belvedere Avenue to Nassau Street.

The plan is to make some changes to the approaches to the intersection, and add traffic lanes as well as cycling and pedestrian lanes. Coun. Mitchell Tweel said he’s raised concerns before about the impact it would have on Ash Drive, which would intersect Mount Edward Road and Spencer Drive. Coun. Julie McCabe, chair of the public works committee, said the city has stated in the past that curbing would be installed so that traffic exiting off Spencer Drive onto Mount Edward Road would only be permitted to turn right only.McCabe added the same rules would be in effect for traffic exiting off Ash Drive onto Mount Edward Road. That will only come if they are included in the capital budget, which the city announces Feb. 27.

• Council did not release the findings of the BDO Canada forensic audit into allegations made by former deputy chief administrative officer Scott Messervery.• The audit was looking into Messervey’s accusations that the city was breaking its own financial rules and not complying with the Municipal Government Act .
