The Blue Jays have exercised their contract option for Chad Green, keeping him in the bullpen for the next two seasons. While initially signed as a multi-inning reliever, Green transitioned to a one-inning specialist before taking on the closer role when Jordan Romano was injured. With the signing of Trevor Hoffman as the new closer, Green is expected to return to his setup role. This article analyzes Green's performance, pitching repertoire, and future prospects with the Blue Jays.

The Jays signed Chad Green to a rather convoluted, choose-your-own-adventure contract before the 2023 season. They chose to take the two-year, 21-million-dollar option after the 2023 season. His contract expires after the 2025 season. Green is a right-handed reliever who turns 34 in May. He threw 12 innings for us at the end of the 2023 season. Last year, he played in 53 games, 53.1 innings, with a 3.21 ERA, 17 saves, 7 holds, and 3 blown saves. Batters hit .216/.271/.379 against him.

When he was signed, we were sold on the idea that he could be a multiple-inning reliever, but, like most of the guys we hear, he could throw multiple innings; when the season started, he was a one-inning guy. Chad got five outs once and four outs ten times. But then, he fell into the role of closer when Jordan Romano went on the IL. He was fine in the closer role, but I’m happy that the team has signed Trevor Hoffman to take the closer role. I like Green better as a setup man.
