The fire chief for Central Saanich says crews continue to respond to a compost pile fire in the district that was sparked on Wednesday.

Kenn Mount says when the call came in, it was initially believed to be an illegal burn, since a permit wasn’t issued.“The drawback is these large kind of fires, they tend to smoulder for a while and produce some kind of nuisance smoke, and that’s the kind of complaints that we’ve been getting. We’ve been managing that by returning calls and putting out some active public information to advise that we’re aware of it.
