A British Columbia Catholic diocese has settled a $3.4 million lawsuit brought by an anonymous man alleging sexual abuse by a former school teacher.
A $3.4 million settlement has been reached in a lawsuit filed by an anonymous man alleging sexual abuse by a former school teacher in British Columbia. The settlement was announced by lawyer Sandra Kovacs, who represented the man in the lawsuit against the Roman Catholic Diocese of Prince George and St. Thomas More Collegiate, a Catholic school in Burnaby. Also named in the lawsuit was former teacher Alfred Patrick Quigley, who the plaintiff alleged sexually abused him in the 1990s.
The lawsuit claimed Quigley groomed the plaintiff before sexually assaulting him in 1993 and 1994. These alleged assaults took place at O'Grady Catholic High School in Prince George and St. Thomas More Collegiate. Quigley denied all allegations in his court response, but he did not participate in the case as it approached trial and could not be reached for comment. Although neither the Diocese nor the School were aware of the alleged wrongdoing at the time, they acknowledged their legal responsibility due to the actions of their employee. In a statement, the Diocese expressed hope that the settlement would allow the plaintiff to continue his healing process and extend that healing to all victims of abuse. The lawsuit detailed how Quigley allegedly engaged in manipulative behavior, taking the plaintiff to sexually charged movies, showering or using the steam room nude together during squash lessons, showering him with gifts, and taking him on overnight trips. Kovacs stated that while the settlement provides financial restitution, the lawsuit was also about accountability. She emphasized the systemic issue of abuse within institutions, particularly the Catholic Church, citing a culture of secrecy and clericalism that enables such abuse. The Diocese and O'Grady High School denied all allegations, including grooming, sexual assault, systemic negligence, and wilful blindness. The plaintiff expressed hope for other abuse survivors to come forward as they embark on their paths towards healing and justice
