There’s no doubt the big sedan is aging. But is it aging well? — via drivingdotca
OVERVIEW Last of the old-school American sedans PROSFlawless drivetrain, spacious interior CONSNot as cushy as you might expect VALUE FOR MONEYFair WHAT TO CHANGE?Softer seats and softer suspension HOW TO SPEC IT?Bronze wheels, different seats Die Hard is aging well. I watch it every Christmas, and it just gets better and better. Nickleback music, on the other hand, maybe not so much.
Some of these items are worth it, like the blind-spot monitoring system, but others — like the premium audio system — are questionable. The Harman/Kardon system has no fewer than 19 speakers working for it, but even with all that power, you’re still acutely aware of where the sound is coming from. It doesn’t fill the space like an expensive stereo ought to.
The steering is comfortably numb for a luxury car and that’s fine, but the suspension could use some more refinement. The 300 doesn’t have a hint of performance intent in it, and it weighs nearly 5,000 pounds, so I expect magic-carpet-road-pillow ride quality, but the 300 doesn’t deliver. Sure, it rides better than an Accord or an Altima, but I expect something this huge and couch-like to be on another level. It isn’t. I don’t need to corner in a 300! Give me the marshmallow suspension.
The interior as a whole, though, is where the 300 is really showing its age. Materials that would’ve been marginal in 2013 are now decidedly behind the times. The 8.4-inch touchscreen is a blessing to use and features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but Uconnect is kind of a mixed bag — it’s visually attractive, fast to respond, and generally easy to use, but some functions are more difficult to adjust than they should be.
