B.C.’s planned minimum wage increase draws mixed reviews
The increase is the third in a planned series of four hikes meant to bring the minimum hourly rate in B.C. up to $15.20 a hour in 2021, from $10.85 in 2016. Beginning June 1, minimum wage workers will earn $14.60 an hour or about $30,000 per year for full-time workers.
About 60 per cent of workers who earn minimum wage are female, while more than half are age 15 to 24, according to a report published last year by Statistics Canada. Just under half of minimum wage earners work full time.Article content continued After lauding poorly paid frontline workers such as cleaners and grocery store staff for keeping people safe and fed through the early days of the pandemic, it would be unjust to undervalue them as the economy recovers, he said.Article content continued
He notes that wages for unskilled workers in construction have naturally increased to $25 a hour or more, because of rising demand for workers.Article content continued
