The late defensive struggles were a blemish on what was otherwise a fine night for the Canucks.
The Vancouver Canucks were well in control of things on Wednesday night at Rogers Arena, but when you’re near the bottom of the standings, there’s a reason why and in a near-collapse in the third period, the Canucks were reminded why.The Canucks skated out of the encounter 7-4 winners but for much of the night, this one never looked like it wouldn’t be close.
Jacob Markstrom had very little work through two periods, just 13 shots, but then had no help in the third period in preserving his shutout effort, as the Canucks seemed to forget how to defend. The first two goals in the second period were cases of Canucks forwards displaying stick control of the sort that separates NHLers from everyone else.
Veronneau was left unchecked to the left of Markstrom and tipped a shot behind the Canucks’ netminder to break the shutout. Blowing the whistleAshton Sautner went to the room after being left shaken by an awful hit thrown in the second period by the Senators’ Jean-Gabriel Pageau.
