A new poll reveals Canadians' preferences for handling trade negotiations with the U.S., particularly regarding tariffs imposed by President Trump. Mark Carney emerges as the top choice for negotiator, while Canadians overwhelmingly support retaliatory tariffs against U.S. goods.
A recent Nanos Research poll, commissioned by CTV News, has shed light on Canadians' preferences for who should handle trade negotiations with the United States, particularly in the context of escalating trade tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump . The survey, conducted between January 31st and February 3rd, 2025, questioned 1,077 Canadians aged 18 and older about their views on various trade-related issues.
When asked which politician would be most effective in negotiating with Trump, Mark Carney, the former Bank of Canada governor and current Liberal leadership candidate, emerged as the top choice, garnering support from 40% of respondents. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre trailed behind with 26% support, followed by Liberal leadership contenders Chrystia Freeland (13%) and Karina Gould (1%).The survey also explored Canadians' stance on retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. In light of Trump's imposition of 25% tariffs on Canadian imports (with a 10% tariff on energy), the poll indicated a significant shift in public opinion towards supporting immediate Canadian countermeasures. A substantial majority, 58%, now favor Canada implementing retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods if the U.S. raises tariffs on Canadian products. This marks a notable increase compared to December 2024, when only 21% of Canadians favored this approach.Canadians also expressed their preference for specific retaliatory measures. The poll revealed strong support for provinces removing U.S. wine, beer, and liquor from store shelves (78% support), as well as imposing dollar-for-dollar counter tariffs on U.S. goods entering Canada (47% support). Additionally, 51% of respondents backed cutting off exports of oil, natural gas, and electricity to the U.S. as a retaliatory measure. The survey also touched upon Canada's defense spending, with a majority (64%) supporting increased spending to reach the current NATO target of 2% of GDP. An additional 12% even advocated for increasing defense spending to the potentially new target of 5% of GDP.
