A new Nanos Research poll for CTV News reveals that Canadians believe Mark Carney would be the most effective negotiator with U.S. President Donald Trump. Canadians also overwhelmingly support Canada's immediate retaliation against U.S. tariffs and increasing defense spending to meet NATO targets.

A new Nanos Research poll conducted for CTV News reveals that Canadians believe former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney would be the most effective negotiator with U.S. President Donald Trump . The poll, which surveyed 1,077 Canadians aged 18 and older, found that 40% of respondents chose Carney as the best candidate for the job, followed by Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre at 26%.

Chrystia Freeland and Karina Gould, both Liberal leadership contenders, received 13% and 1% respectively, while 12% were unsure and 9% believed it wouldn't make a difference. The survey delved into Canadians' perspectives on trade negotiations with the United States, tariffs, and Canada's response to recent actions. The results highlight a shift in public opinion regarding Canada's stance on tariffs. In December 2024, 47% of Canadians favored negotiation as the primary response to U.S. tariffs, while only 58% supported immediate retaliation. This trend has reversed, with 58% now advocating for immediate retaliation and 21% favoring negotiation. Canadians also expressed a range of opinions on specific retaliatory measures, with 78% supporting provinces removing U.S. wine, beer, and liquor from stores, 26% favoring dollar-for-dollar counter tariffs on U.S. goods, and 51% supporting cutting off oil, natural gas, and electricity exports to the U.S. Regarding Canada's defense spending, 64% of respondents support reaching the current NATO target of 2% of GDP, and 12% support increasing it further to the potential new target of 5%. This aligns with recent criticism from Trump regarding Canada's defense spending, which was projected to be 1.37% of GDP in 2024. The poll underscores Canadians' concerns about trade relations with the United States and their desire for a firm stance on tariffs and defense spending.
