Canadian teenager Erin Brooks is ready to make her mark on the World Surf League 's Championship Tour after achieving full-time status as a pro surfer. Having won her lone appearance on the tour as a wild card last year, Brooks is eager to build on that success at the season-opening Lexus Pipe Pro in Hawaii. The 17-year-old will face Americans Gabriela Bryan and Sawyer Lindblad in her opening heat at the legendary Banzai Pipeline, a wave known for its challenging conditions.
Brooks, who achieved Canadian citizenship last year, is confident and excited to represent her country on the world stage. 'My goal is to make it two (wins) in a row,' Brooks said. 'But we'll see what happens.' Brooks' journey to the Championship Tour began with a perfect 10 en route to winning the Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro in Australia last May. She continued her impressive run by finishing runner-up at the GWM Sydney Surf Pro the following month. Her historic victory as a wild card at the Fiji Pro last August against Olympic silver medalist Tatiana Weston-Webb cemented her place among the world's top surfers. Brooks will be competing against 17 other women on the tour, with the field being cut down to 12 after seven events and then five for the season-ending WSL Finals in Fiji. The winning prize money ranges from $80,000 in the season opener to $100,000 after the mid-season cut and $200,000 for the WSL Finals. Brooks will be traveling with her parents and coach Jake Patterson, a former WSL tour veteran who won the 1998 Pipeline Masters. The Canadian teen is looking forward to a year without legal distractions, having secured her citizenship after a lengthy battle which previously hampered her Olympic qualifying opportunities. Brooks' focus now lies on representing Canada proudly and making a lasting impact on the world stage. 'Now I can just go out there and represent Canada,' she said. 'And I'm just so excited to have the Maple Leaf on my shoulder.
