Petty Officer 2nd Class Gregory Applin, a crew member of HMCS Montreal, tragically died after a rigid-hull inflatable boat capsized in the Bedford Basin on Friday night. Commodore Jacob French, commander of Canadian Fleet Atlantic, confirmed the death during a press conference in Halifax on Monday. Applin was participating in sea trials with HMCS Montreal in preparation for future missions. The trials involved sailors mooring to buoys in the northern part of the Bedford Basin.
At the conclusion of the day's trials, a rigid-hull inflatable boat was used to transport the trial staff ashore to Mill Cove jetty. As the boat returned to the naval dockyard with a coxswain from Naval Fleet School Atlantic and a second sailor from HMCS Montreal on board, an incident occurred causing the boat to capsize and throw both sailors into the water. Unable to contact HMCS Montreal due to the boat likely being submerged, the coxswain used his cellphone to call 911. The call triggered a rescue effort by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, with ships dispatched from the Canadian Coast Guard. Both sailors were pulled from the water and transported to the QEII hospital, but Applin could not be resuscitated. The coxswain was released from hospital on Saturday. An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service, a branch of the military police. The investigation is standard practice for this type of incident. Applin, 38, was a weapons engineering technician and had served in the navy for 19 years, including a deployment to the Indo-Pacific in 2023. HMCS Montreal has been withdrawn from the Bedford Basin, and the navy is awaiting the appropriate time to resume operations. Commodore French emphasized that the focus is currently on supporting the team and Applin's family
