A young Canadian luge team captured bronze in the team relay at the world championships in Whistler, B.C., on Saturday. The six-member squad, consisting of Embyr-Lee Susko, Devin Wardrope, Cole Anthony Zajanski, Theo Downey, Beattie Podulsky and Kailey Allan, completed the course in a combined time of two minutes 51.641 seconds. Germany secured gold with a time of 2:50.
361, led by Julia Taubitz, Hannes Orlamuender, Paul Constantin Gubitz, Max Langenhan, Jessica Degenhardt and Cheyenne Rosenthal. Austria claimed silver. The race witnessed several challenging moments for competing nations. Latvia's women's doubles team, Marta Robezniece and Kitija Bogdanova, faced a crash and flip, requiring assistance off the track and leading to their disqualification. Meanwhile, the American men's doubles team of Marcus Mueller and Ansel Haugsjaa skidded out of the final turn but managed to recover and finish the run. The U.S. eventually secured fourth place. Earlier in the day, Langenhan triumphed in the men's singles event, claiming his second consecutive world championship title with a combined time of 1:39.922 seconds. Langenhan attributed his success to the team's unwavering support and dedication throughout the season. 'I think last year, Altenberg is one of my favourite tracks. And then here in Whistler, normally it's every time so (expletive) close, and every small mistake costs you so much time,' he said.'But in the end, I'm super happy with these two runs.” Langenhan finished 0.135 seconds ahead of teammate Felix Loch, who delivered a remarkable second run with a time of 49.909 seconds. 'I was under a little bit of stress after Felix putting such a good time down. But in the end I’m super happy,' Langenhan said. 'I think it’s like the best compliment for the whole team. They put in so much energy throughout the whole season. And if you're bringing them one and two, I think they are super stoked.” Austria's Nico Gleirscher clinched the bronze medal. Langenhan also secured gold in the new discipline of mixed singles on Thursday alongside Taubitz, who herself triumphed in the women's singles race on Friday. Canada's three sleds did not advance to the second round of the men's singles competition. Theo Downey concluded the first run in 50.815 seconds for 22nd place, Dylan Morse placed 26th, and Bastian van Wouw, competing in his first-ever senior-level race, finished 28th. Van Wouw described competing against luge veterans as 'awesome.' “I’m always watching the livestreams of their races,' he said.'And now being able to be a part of it is just unreal.” The world championships concluded on Saturday with the team relay event.
