The City of Colwood on Vancouver Island, Canada, has experienced an overwhelming response to its innovative municipal funding model for family physicians. The city, facing a national doctor shortage, has received over 100 applications since November, prompting them to develop a strategy for selection. The program offers benefits like paid vacation, parental leave, medical benefits, and a defined pension, attracting physicians seeking a more sustainable work environment.
The City of Colwood on B.C's Vancouver Island hired its first family physician under a municipal funding model, which will see doctors receive paid vacation and parental leave, medical benefits and a defined pension from the municipal pension plan as city employees do.The City of Colwood has an unusual problem: Years into a national family- doctor shortage , the B.C. community just west of Victoria is overwhelmed with expressions of interest from physicians.
“We weren’t expecting this at all,” he said in an interview on Monday. “We’re going, ‘We don’t even have enough people to follow up on all these leads.’ What a nice problem to have, right?”, doctors will work alongside a medical clinic office manager and up to four medical office assistants, lessening the administrative load that doctors have long flagged as contributing to burnout and distracting from patient care.
The program was born from consultations with local doctors, including Jesse Pewarchuk, who now serves as the clinic’s medical director, and with the support of former Esquimalt-Metchosin MLA Mitzi Dean and former B.C. health minister Adrian Dix, Mr. Kobayashi said. “We don’t even have our recruitment videos loaded up on the doctors’ Facebook pages or anything yet,” he said. “And this media attention has only sent way more doctors.”
