Conservation officers relocated a mother bear and her three cubs again after they were spotted near Colwood this week.

The BC Conservation Officer Service says it has relocated a mother bear and her three cubs for a second time after they were spotted near the Colwood area this week.

Then, this week, the bear family was spotted near the Colwood area and was relocated on Tuesday to a wilderness area on southern Vancouver Island, according to the COS. “The sow and three cubs have not shown any aggressive or conflict behaviour but Conservation Officers do not want the bears to become comfortable with the presence of people in an urban environment,” the statement added. The move comes after another mother black bear was hit and killed by a car in the Sooke area in early November, leaving behind her three cubs.

“Another reason is escalations in behaviour happen when bears have consistent access to garbage, bears start resulting in property damage, they get bold with people, charging at them. Those are bears that ultimately become risk to public safety and end up losing their lives.”While the bears near Colwood were able to be relocated twice, Cameron noted that moving wildlife is not always an option.
