So, instead of beginning Thursday night in Canada, at 7 p.m PT, it kicks off Friday at 5 a.m. PT.

This gold-medal showdown originally had been scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. local time on Friday . But, holding a championship soccer game outdoors, under the searing mid-day sun, seemed unnecessarily cruel.

According to Weather.com forecasts, the temperature in Tokyo is expected to reach 34 degrees Celsius with a 39C heat index by 1 p.m. local time on Friday — about when the gold-medal match would have ended, some two hours after its original start time. Instead, the game now will begin when the temperature in the Tokyo/Yokohama region is expected to have dropped to 29C, with a 33C heat index — but after sundown.

Earlier this week Olympic and soccer leaders from both Sweden and Canada pleaded with Tokyo Games organizers to pick a new start time that’s not only safer for the participants, but likelier to result in a better-played game.Article content
