No one is giving a Canada a chance against Belgium in their opening game of the 2022 FIFAA World Cup on Wednesday and that is fine by them.
“We don’t hope any more, we believe,” said midfielder Jonathan Osorio on Sunday. “We’re very confident in ourselves. We want to show that we are a football nation, that we can compete with the best in the world.”
Belgium will also be without striker Romelu Lukaku, who is recovering from his own hamstring injury sustained with his club Inter Milan in Italy. Lukaku suffered a setback in his recovery and likely will sit out the game against Canada. The best case scenario would be a winner-take-all clash against the experienced Moroccans, who are playing in their sixth World Cup.
The COVID-19 pandemic changed that, forcing Concacaf to come up with a new system. But Canada still had to play a pair of preliminary qualifying rounds, which included a trip to Haiti with COVID-19 still very much a concern.
