Critics say 30\u002Dmonth startup immigration processing time is unhelpful in attracting new business founders

Vartika Manasvi is the sort of successful entrepreneur Canada wants to attract through the government’s Start-up Visa Program.

“The world of tech startups is a global competition and the places that we’re competing against move fast,” he said. “We had around 30,000 software engineers on the platform. We had over 100 companies using the product to hire engineers. We had over 3,000 jobs posted at any given point in time on the platform,” Manasvi said.

Manasvi said that for startups, trying to attract new capital investment or corner an emerging market, that is far too long. “Any program that works with an early-stage entrepreneur has to just assume that the majority of them are not going to be what they started out with,” he said. “It’s not a bad thing when people get back on the horse.”“We’re attracting entrepreneurial people. That’s a really important part of how we build our economy.”

During the pandemic, the government pivoted to make permanent immigrants of people here on work or study permits. This created a new temporary-resident-to-permanent-resident pathway program and as the government works through the application for that program, it had to take in fewer immigrants from other economic classes. The current allocation for the Startup Visa Program and a program for the self-employed is only 1,000 people.
