Cafe Malabar, a south Indian restaurant previously located in the Victoria Public Market, is set to open in the former Tug Eatery space at 100-407 Swift Street. Tug Eatery closed earlier this week after operating since 2021. Cafe Malabar was forced to relocate after the closure of the Coho Commissary in the Victoria Public Market in December 2023.

One harbourside restaurant is closing, and another restaurant is taking its place, in a shakeup to the Victoria Inner Harbour area.

Tug Eatery first opened in 2021 as a family-owned restaurant and bar. Meanwhile, Cafe Malabar – a south Indian restaurant that was previously located in the Victoria Public Market – was voted one of Canada’s top 10 best new restaurants by Air Canada enRoute magazine in 2024.Cafe Malabar was one of the restaurants affected by a closure of a shared kitchen space in the Victoria Public Market in December.

On Wednesday, Kolathodan told CHEK News that the team took the month off, and that he went to India for a vacation and to learn.He says the team is excited to open at the new space, and that the new landlords – the founders of Tug Eatery – have been very welcoming. “It’s right by the water so it actually resembles our cuisine, because we’re coastal cuisine,” he said.
