At least two other cities — 1972 Winter Olympics host Sapporo and 2002 host Salt Lake City — have either bid or expressed interest but Vancouver has advantage of geographic rotation.
Vancouver has been Canada’s leading special events hub for more than a decade now and the past week only consolidated that status.
All of that action came the same week in which the Vancouver 2030 “discovery group” began to turn the corner into a formal bid to host the first Indigenous-led Games in Olympics’ history. The “B.C. 2030” vision could include eight or more participating cities but would still be largely anchored in Greater Vancouver. The followup to Vancouver 2010 is being positioned as largely privately funded, with sponsorships, TV and ticket sales projected to cover operating costs of just over $2 billion.
With the potential to host part of the FIFA Cup in 2026 and the Winter Olympics in 2030, Vancouver and B.C. stand poised to strengthen their place on the global stage. And make no mistake: It’s entirely within the realm of possibility that Vancouver gets both, a one-two punch that will only create even more of a bull market for sport and community development on the West Coast.
Meanwhile, Washington Commanders’ owner Dan Snyder is having his name brought up in the U.S. Congress on an almost daily basis and that’s never a good thing in the eyes of the NFL and the other 31 owners who cherish the league’s antitrust exemption. Elsewhere, Colin Kaepernick continues to work out, waiting for a call he may never get.Article content
