The bid is back! Vancouver back in the running to host 2026 World Cup games, and the Vancouver Whitecaps are all\u002Din.

The B.C. Pavilion Corporation , the Crown corporation that operates B.C. Place, confirmed on Thursday that there will be real, actual grass in the Dome should Vancouver be successful in its bid. They have been liaising with a team of “technical experts” on solving the logistical problem of installing grass in the stadium.

As B.C. Place is an enclosed stadium, growing grass inside is problematic; there are costly solutions to that, whether it be ultraviolet growing lights and hydroponics, or a temporary surface that can be removed into sunlight when not in use. Previous tournaments and FIFA-approved international games have allowed temporary grass fields, either rolled up turf or grass tile pallets.Article content

The facility just installed a new FieldTurf surface at a reported cost of $3.1 million to taxpayers, although it will still be within its five-year lifespan when the World Cup is set to play in the summer of 2026. Commonwealth Stadium, the site of Edmonton’s playing bid, is in the same boat, having switched from grass to FieldTurf in 2010.

While permanent grass fields would be welcomed by not just the Whitecaps, but the CFL’s B.C. Lions and Edmonton Elks, it could mean a temporary eviction for all of them, as FIFA’s initial requirements is that the grass have time to take root and remain unused. The installation of a field project of this size, and the complexity of variables around it, might mean the other tenants of the fields might also have to find temporary digs elsewhere during the process.
