Some ants may indeed crawl into the Toronto FC locker room next season, but none of them will be of the Atomic variety.

The truth is, there is no deal and TFC’s all-time leading scorer will not be joining the Reds next season.

According to a source, Giovinco and TFC did also talk about one day having the Atomic Ant retire in a Toronto jersey — though it’s uncertain whether that would be as a player or simply as a symbolic gesture. The Reds will still have three Designated Players under contract next season — Altidore, Alejandro Pozuelo and Yeferson Soteldo. Each MLS club is allowed three DPs, though there is a chance that TFC could move one or two, likely Altidore and/or Soteldo. Altidore, while on a roll lately with two goals in two games, has had trouble staying on the field the last couple of seasons and TFC would obviously like all of their star players to be able to play in the majority of the games.

With the Canadian Championship having priority over the final two MLS games, Perez reiterated this week that Toronto’s lineup for the Atlanta match will not include all of the team’s regular starters, though they still hope to get three points. The coach wants to save as many as his top players as possible for Wednesday’s match against Pacific FC.
