The ship has already sailed in terms of Toronto FC coach Javier Perez having “all hands on deck” for next Wednesday’s all\u002Dimportant Canadian Championship…
“He’s not close,” said Perez. “I saw him this morning. He’s progressing well, but he’s not even running outside. The only thing I can anticipate is that his recovery is following the right steps and now he doesn’t have pain. But he’s not on the field so it’s going to be difficult to bring him back before the end of the season.”Article content
Perez reiterated that, though TFC has two regular season MLS games remaining, including a match this Saturday night against Atlanta United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the priority is Wednesday’s game against Pacific FC at BMO Field, and that will come into play in terms of who plays on Saturday. In other words, don’t expect Toronto’s best lineup against Atlanta.
A 2-0 win by Atlanta over Toronto on Oct.16 ended with some bad blood with a brouhaha breaking out in the tunnel leading to the dressing rooms at BMO Field after TFC’s Auro and Ezequiel Barco of Atlanta picked up red cards for head butting each other. Perez expects a determined Atlanta side on Saturday as the Five Stripes are fighting to remain in the playoff picture.Article content
“The first time we played in their home field , we lost 1-0 and it was a pretty competitive game and I think it will be similar this time. We’re going to have to control some key players. That field is turf and the ball rolls so fast it makes it difficult for every team that is not used to playing on that kind of surface. But we have to be prepared and try to stop or minimize the counter-attacks that they do so well,” Perez added.
