Gardening with Native Plants of the Pacific Northwest offers a depth of knowledge and a practical approach to gardening

For many good reasons, there is a renewed interest in native plants. As we deal with changing weather patterns and the resulting stressors, particularly drought, our native plants seem more tolerant of these conditions.

They also created a stunning garden featuring native plants. The nursery/garden was open to the public one day a year. Today, the garden is owned by the City of Shoreline and run by the non-profit, member-based Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Foundation. It is open to the public year-round. Visit kruckeberg.org for specific times.

This book is science based which gives it a broad-based credibility. It is highly relevant for today’s urban gardens as it shows plants in their natural habitat and it covers all zones of the Pacific Northwest in their many differing conditions. “Before any gardens existed, native plants provided all the needs of wildlife. For example, when the native mock orange blooms, it’s simply smothered in cutter bees.

“I have one myself, and it’s designed with native plants. What they bring to the table is ‘charismatic fauna’. Milkweed was unheard of a few years ago, but its connection to the monarch butterfly changed that dramatically. There’s a significant demand for it now, not only to attract monarchs to our gardens but also for the preservation of this declining butterfly species.”
