In a rational world, the federal government would be lauding Calgary Co-Op and Leaf Environmental Products for their leadership and innovation on plastic waste. Instead, it's bringing the hammer down. Column by Rob Breakenridge: calgary yyc cdnpoli

This has all proven to be effective and popular with customers, while preventing literally tens of millions of plastic bags from going into landfills — a success story in every sense of the word. So, of course, Ottawa is going to put an end to it.

The bureaucrats at Environment and Climate Change Canada have deemed these bags to be “non-conventional plastic,” which seems odd given that an item is either plastic or it isn’t. They argue that the bags might not be compostable for individuals or in other municipalities. They also argue that the bags wouldn’t necessarily break down on their own if they were discarded as waste.

Unless sanity can prevail here, Calgary Co-op is soon going to have to start pivoting to stay in line with the incoming regulations — a needless cost to the company and a needless inconvenience to consumers.
