New general managers like to have their own coaches. But there was not a lot wrong with Sheldon Keefe\u0027s work, at least in regular season.
Keefe must also have feared for his job, but then came the breakdown in contract extension talks between Shanahan and Dubas and the latter’s shocking dismissal. That was bigger than any bench change and Keefe was suddenly shifted to the back burner.
The ensuing weeks have also provided some perspective for all about the Florida result. Maybe losing to the Stanley Cup finalists, who defeated two well-coached clubs in Boston and Carolina, wasn’t so shameful. Treliving could do worse than bring back the tactician behind two seasons of 110-plus points. The Leafs must get back in the playoffs to let Treliving make his mark and Shanahan or Keefe another chance to show their mettle. There was some progress this season, whether it was the Core Four becoming better defensively, the team finally winning at least one round and a marked improvement in goaltending.
Many GMs in Treliving’s situation can use an incoming coach who is under contract as an insurance plan. As in Keefe either immediately produces results in the autumn or Treliving can drop him and presumably have used the time to line up someone more familiar, who is looking for work after the 2023-24 season commences.He inherited fiery coach Bob Hartley from predecessor Jay Feaster and was rewarded when Hartley became the Flames’ first Jack Adams Award winner.
