Keefe must also have feared for his job, but then came the breakdown in contract extension talks between Shanahan and Dubas and the latter’s shocking dismissal. That was bigger than any bench change and Keefe was suddenly shifted to the back burner.
Treliving could do worse than bring back the tactician behind two seasons of 110-plus points. The Leafs must get back in the playoffs to let Treliving make his mark and Shanahan or Keefe another chance to show their mettle. There was some progress this season, whether it was the Core Four becoming better defensively, the team finally winning at least one round and a marked improvement in goaltending.
In rushing to replace Gulutzan after 2017-18, Treliving turned to Bill Peters, who produced Calgary’s first division title in 13 years. But there was baggage that Treliving hadn’t been vetted about.
