Belleville Police Service is receiving more than $206,000 for Automated Licence Plate Recognition Technology .ALPR technology installed in active-duty police vehicles automatically scans licence plates and alerts officers to stolen or expired plates, or plates registered to suspended drivers.
Smith says, “In a world where every second counts, this investment could make a real difference to members of our community.” Police Chief Mike Callaghan says the technology will help officers identify suspects and crime vehicle from our community and across the province.The system can also notify officers of missing and wanted persons and vehicles associated with AMBER alerts.
The province says its investment in ALPR technology supports the recent move to eliminate licence plate renewal fees and stickers without requiring an officer to see a physical licence sticker to validate a vehicle.
