Manoah mania didn’t exactly run wild at Rogers Centre Saturday, but an important step forward was forged for the Blue Jays pitcher.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.“There was just kind of silence,’’ said Manoah when Schneider approached the mound. “I had known Pete had come out there. Then, when he started asking me if I wanted to stay in the game I was like: ‘Maybe Pete didn’t come out here?’ I wasn’t sure. I told him I wanted to stay in the game and pleaded my case.

Unsettling and yet unscathed, it was far from a typical first inning for Manoah. To say he did not look completely comfortable would be an understatement. His pitches were sailing high and at one point with a runner on base, he seemed to lose his footing on the mound and was charged with a balk.Article content

The second of those runs came from a home run to leadoff man Cedric Mullins, which originally was ruled a double but was then confirmed by video review.Manoah walked only one in his 5.2 innings, a big improvement on his previous outing against the Yankees when he issued a career-high seven free passes.

“His bat has been pretty consistent the past few days,’’ said Schneider of Springer. “He’s hitting the ball hard, a double , a homer . I think his at-bats are kind of what we’re used to seeing.”Article content
