“Black Ice,” a documentary premiering Saturday at TIFF, highlights the contributions Black Canadians made to hockey, and the anti-Black racism that came, and comes, along with it.

A goalie dropping to his knees and the slapshot are both integral components of hockey credited to the Coloured Hockey League of the Maritimes — an all-Black hockey league founded in 1895 in Nova Scotia. “Black Ice,” a documentary premiering Saturday at TIFF, highlights these and other contributions Black Canadians made to hockey, and the anti-Black racism that came, and comes, along with it.

“When fled north they used to touch the back of trees for moss, because moss grows on the north side of trees,” guiding them in Canada’s direction, Darril explained in the film. Speaking with the Star, Davis — son of the late Harlem Globetrotter Mel Davis — described a mix of nerves and anticipation ahead of the premiere Saturday. To add to the buzz of the documentary, the 46-year-old Vancouverite recruited the help of its high-profile co-producers: Drake, LeBron James and media personality Maverick Carter .

“That lineage from Willie O’Ree to any number of players who should’ve been given a shot to play professionally, no one knows about it. Representation has been present but not highlighted,” Davis continued. Inclusion has been called upon to be a possible solution to anti-Black racism, but Davis questions that and asks the audience to question what inclusion they fight for.
