Black banners were added to provincial websites Thursday, and frames on portraits of the Queen at the B.C. legislature were draped in black

The province will mark the Queen’s death with a commemorative service at Christ Church Cathedral in Victoria.

“Although it’s at the cathedral, it will be a civic gathering for the community, not just for Anglicans or people of faith. It’s for everybody,” said Tucker.“My guess is that right now, people just want to do something. You put flowers out on public monuments, or maybe if you are a spiritual person, you stop in a place of worship and just sit there and let the music wash over you.”

“I would say in this time of decolonization and global awareness that that is an entirely appropriate thing for him to do. I welcome it,” said Tucker. “We are long past the time when any religious tradition or any theology can claim to have a corner on truth, let alone the truth.” A Friday evening service called evening prayer was devoted to music and readings “that keep us mindful of this time of sadness,” she said. The public can sign a book of condolence at Government House on Rockland Avenue or in the B.C. legislature, which will be illuminated at night with royal blue lights.
