The OPP said there are many other types of scams, but if the public is educated, they are less likely to become victims

Ontario Provincial Police say awareness is key as they warn the public of a scam that has been circulating in the East Algoma area.

“For instance, a fraudster may pose as a representative from a phone company, claiming they need to replace your router and update the fibre optic lines in your area,” said OPP in a news release. “They may tell you that your new router will be delivered the next day,” police explain. “Shortly after, another supposed company representative contacts you, stating that a system cleanup must be performed before the new router can be installed. “Police say these scammers use confidence tricks to convince victims there are issues with their devices, even when no problems exist.
