Several dozen participants are allowed out of jail and into group homes for at least 18 months. They get treatment, medication, group therapy and individual counseling. Here's how Behavioral Health Court works.
Behavioral Health Court is a program in San Diego Superior Court offered to a small number of defendants in criminal cases who suffer from serious mental illness. It’s an intense program designed for the most serious cases.
A guilty plea to a gun charge would bar admission to the program. Registered sex offenders and registered arsonists are not eligible. Candidates must have failed at lower-intensity, court-ordered solutions. They must be mentally competent to stand trial, and agree to plead guilty and follow the strict requirements of the program.
Applicants are screened by a mental health professional, then the applications are reviewed by the judge, prosecutors, defense attorneys and others, including probation and treatment professionals. They decide as a team whether to accept someone into the program.
