The coming-of-age comedy, based on Caitlin Moran’s novel, is not quite as winning as Feldstein is—but with a star this incandescent, it’s hard to complain
, she’s the 2019 movie star everyone wants to root for, someone who seems incapable of setting a foot wrong., which premiered here at the Toronto International Film Festival, is likely to be a minor footnote in that tale of global domination. WInning and funny, while also a bit surface-level and predictable, it is an excellent case for the twin powers of Feldstein and, the author who adapted her own autobiographical novel to the screen.
As Johanna Morrigan, a 16-year-old from a poor family in dingy Wolverhampton, Feldstein makes a convincing transformation from dreamy oddball to the self-invented “Dolly Wilde,” a fearless and outlandish music critic at the scrappy music weeklyShe struts into Britain’s music clubs in a top hat and fishnet tights, writes savage reviews, and drinks way too much in the company of the all-male magazine staff who treat her as a curiosity, or maybe a mascot.
